How To Heal Your External Body Piercing
Your piercing needs to be cleaned 2 times per day. Do not clean it more often as this can irritate your piercing and possibly delay your healing.
- Before cleaning, wash your hands with a liquid antibacterial soap and hot water. NEVER touch a healing piercing with dirty hands.
- Prepare the area for the cleaning by rinsing or soaking with warm water and be sure to remove any crust using a cotton swab and warm water.
- Apply a small amount of cleaning solution (liquid Dial, Provon, or Satin) to the area. Clean the jewelry and the area around it and gently rotate the jewelry 2 to 3 times. (you do not need to rotate the first several times cleaning)
- Rinse the area thoroughly under running water. Rotate the jewelry 1 to 2 times to make sure there isn’t any soap residue left in the piercing.
- Gently pat dry with a tissue.
- It is recommended to do 1 or 2 sea salt soaks a day for 5-10 minutes per soak. This can speed up the healing of your piercing. It is also a good idea to add Vitamin C and Zinc to your diet as this will also help your health and healing.
Sea Salt Soaks:
Dissolve a pinch (1/4 tsp.) of non-iodized sea salt into one cup (8 oz.) of warm to hot water. If possible depending on the piercing invert the cup over the area to form a vacuum and soak like that. If unable too, use a clean cotton ball or gauze pad soaked in the sea salt.
This will help stimulate air and blood circulation which facilitates healing. It is advisable to soak before you do anything active, it will prevent crust from being pulled inside your piercing as you move around. Salt water is the only additional product other than the cleaner and water you should use to care for your piercing.
